Why do managers need Change Leadership Training?

I’m sure I’m not the first person to link Charles Darwin’s famous quote to Organizational Change. But it really does sum it up for me.  “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”   Ensuring that managers have change leadership training is a first step to ensuring our organization has the skills to adapt.

Why do some organizations succeed with change, while others don’t?

No doubt, we’ve all seen companies come in to the market place with big advertising budgets and lots of hype, but they don’t last long. On the other hand, we have seen little companies start with almost nothing, but continue to survive, grow and even thrive in difficult times.  What’s happening here?

Success often lies in an organizations ability to adapt to a changing environment. And our world seems to be changing at an increasing rate!  What worked last year, or even last month, may no longer be relevant.  So we need to somehow build adaptability into our culture.  We need to be agile enough to change quickly.

Therefore, change leadership and management skills become important competencies. Perhaps even core competencies in some cases.  That is, it’s a critical skill that needs to be cultivated and leveraged in every part of the organization.  It needs to be part of the culture, the norm of operations.

What types of Change Leadership Training do we need?

It starts with an awareness that we are influenced by the world around us. So we need to understand what drives change.  We need to always be assessing the drivers of change, such that we can be proactive in both reducing risks and leveraging opportunities.

But then, we also need to be prepared with the tools to implement change quickly. So managers need a framework to guide the change process complete, from concept to fully operational.  Knowledge of best practices and models of change will help managers to build a framework suitable to the scale and nature of their organization.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you need to be acutely aware of the human dynamics of change and how that impacts behaviour. You need to apply specific leadership techniques, such as exceptional communication, to lead people through an often tumultuous and emotional time.

What is the best approach to Change Leadership Training?

There are many different approaches to training. So it’s important to choose one that aligns with your needs.  It could range from attending a course in person, online or having a consultant work with you to design a customized approach for your workplace.
